We went shopping in Durham in the rain, and came home with golden beetroot and purple potatoes.

Also with purple beetroot, and white-with-golden(ish)-skins potatoes, but that's less interesting.

And English asparagus - perhaps it is spring, despite the rain.

If they're those tiny purple potatoes (And not a yam) then I often cook them by shallow-frying thick slices with olive oil and chilli and drizzling with fresh lime juice. And it's not possible to be hungry for them at 4ish am, but I am (also insomniac, obviously)

They are little purple potatoes: I usually boil them and make potato salad, but if there are any left over they are delicious frizzled up in butter, so maybe I should explore the frying option more thoroughly - your version sounds good (I should have bought a lime. The limes looked juicy, and I was tempted, but I had quite a lot of lemons...)

I do that thing with limes and lemons all the time! (And I meant thin slices, not thick - I ought to be asleep, but my body says "Doing too much, time to be alert at unholy hours"

I have some carrots.

I was thinking of making soup with the ordinary beets and some rhubarb.

It was delicious.

I used to work in an office with very mixed nationalities, and the food discussions were always interesting. There was a big debate over asparagus: green or white?

(Green, obviously).
