Bad news, good news [Aug. 29th, 2014|09:05 pm]

The bad news is that Jean Redpath has died. I associate her with the early days of the folk revival, and with the Burns project; but it seems that she had not faded away altogether, she had simply moved to America. YouTube tries to distract me with her collaborations with Garrison Keillor, but Burns is the better poet. This is over-arranged for my taste, but there's nothing wrong with the voice, the melody, the words:

The good news is that archaeologists have found a wooden Roman toilet seat - at Vindolanda, where else?

They found wooden socks?! Oh, wait...

That is EXACTLY what I thought! But then, whoever wrote that piece thinks that Vindolanda is on the Wall, so what do they know!

I love the toilet seat. It's good to know that they were thinking about the important things.

The name Jean Redpath is familiar, but I don't think I know her music.

The toilet seat!! We have been using the same model for THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

Because it works. And here's the sort of bathroom it works in:

Not a whole lot of privacy in this bathroom as currently constituted ;-)

Not a whole lot of privacy in a frontier fort, altogether - maybe for the commanding officer, but not fo the men!
