Shopping the Waitrose way [Nov. 27th, 2015|09:58 pm]

Waitrose goes to extraordinary lengths to convince us it is an altogether superior grocery.

The driver who delivered my online order this morning noticed an admission ticket lying around to 'Roman Fort': which Roman fort was that, he asked, so we told him about Binchester, and he told us about the year he spent working at Vindolanda (it's a generation since we were last at Vindolanda, time we went again) and his holiday trips to see the Roman remains in Syria ("before...") and Sicily.

Among the goodies on offer but which I did not buy: "Free Range Potato Omelette." Taking compassion in farming to new lengths.

I weep with joy that the potatoes are permitted to range freely!

I picture them, gambolling in the fields, their little brown faces all smiles...

Ah, but now we have free range Waitrose, wandering the country in his white van, dreaming of Roman remains...

*pauses to dream of Trader Joe's*
